A Value of a Woman More Than Materialistic Goods
When there is a marriage, does it make sense that a woman’s value should be determined by the gifts her family can provide to the groom? The greatest gift a man can receive is a woman and her heart. Dowries, an age-old practice, often reduce a woman to a mere commodity, overshadowing her intrinsic worth and unique personality. Instead of perpetuating outdated customs, we should focus on fostering relationships built on mutual respect, love, and understanding. True partnership in marriage comes from recognizing and valuing each other's contributions, shared experiences, and the deep emotional bonds that tie two individuals together. By moving away from materialistic measures of worth and towards genuine connection, we can create a more equitable and loving society.
A lot of women don’t get married due to the fact that a groom’s family wouldn’t get as much material goods in terms of monetary means if he wed that bride. A woman thereby gets valued due to the material goods that family can provide to the groom. This not only undermines the true essence of marriage but also perpetuates gender inequality, making women feel lesser and unappreciated.
Furthermore, marriages based on dowry arrangements can lead to severe issues such as financial strain on the bride’s family, and in extreme cases, dowry-related violence. Many women suffer silently due to the fear of societal judgment and the pressure to conform to these archaic practices. Therefore, it is imperative to challenge and abolish the dowry system, promoting instead values of equality, respect, and mutual support.
Educating communities about the adverse effects of dowry and encouraging young couples to reject such practices can pave the way for a progressive society. Legal measures should also be enforced strictly to ensure that no woman has to endure the indignity of being commodified. In celebrating marriages that prioritize love, respect, and partnership over materialistic transactions, we lay the foundation for a future where every individual is valued for who they are, not what they can bring.
